Know Your Roots
Heritage Day is on the 24th of September every
year. On this day we recognize and celebrate the cultural wealth of South
Africa. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering their cultural route,
their ancestral lineage and the cultural diversity that is found in the
motherland. To mark this day, a variety of events are held across the country
Shaka day, commentating the Zulu monarch Shaka Zulu was
celebrated on September 24th in South Africa historically. He was credited
with bringing the Zulu clan together and forming it every year where people assemble
at his grave to pay their respects. After receiving some criticism from the
Inkhatha Freedom Party (IFP) a majority of Zulu Party, a request for this day to be
approved as an official holiday was refused in 1995, it was decided that the
day is needed and would be known as “Heritage day”
Various youth have expressed their definitions of what is
heritage day and how would they like it to be celebrated Rehauhetswe Mohale
said “Heritage is a day we celebrate culture and diversity
And the how part is to try to remember roots by wearing the
traditional outfits, trying out african dishes and learning about different
cultures” while Zandile Magubane said “Heritage day is a day dedicated to
culture which is a broad cover of heritage. I say broad because heritage is
culture and nowadays culture has evolved.
So I would wish for heritage day to be celebrated by doing
something that showcases cultures. Something in which all public figures are
involved so that they can influence the public to participate. Basically doing
something as a country al at the same time. Like the December 31st
countdown but based on culture, heritage”
Due to Corona virus we can not go out there and celebrate
our different cultures. We all hope this pandemic could
pass so that we can go and show people around the world the beauty of South
Africa.

The Economic Freedom Fighters and the Maphanga’s family plead for justice
It is
almost a year and justice system is still not served!!!
By Herman Moloi
The family of Maphanga is pleading with the justice system
to do what is right and sentence the 39 year old accused Mr. Collen Mathonsi,
who confessed to killing her late lover Sebenzile Maphanga, he killed and
removed her body parts and burned her.
Today the family of Maphanga and members of the Economic
Freedom Fighters are chanting outside the Soshanguve Magistrate Court as they
await for a psychiatrist report. A Community Leader and a close family
member Mr. David Nkosi said “this is the 19th time we have been in
and outside this court, today we demand answers from our justice system, we
plead with them to sentence the accused” he continued with an angry voice “ WE
ARE TIRED”. The EFF chairperson of ward 34 who had accompanied the family of
the Maphanga also expressed his views and said he wishes to see this case
ending today.
He further said his feeling that the accused is playing a
mind game with the justice system and pro-longing the case intentionally, he
pleads with the judge to make a sentence today and he said he believes the
appropriate sentence, is life sentence in this way it will send a strong message
to all abusers out there.
The accused and the late Sebenzile Maphanga dated for
2weeks this is according to the community leader. On the 3rd of
October 2020, in soshanguve ward 88, the accused faces aa murder allegation
after allegedly luring Sebenzile from her friend’s home to his vehicle.
After being reported as a missing person Maphanga’s burnt
remains were discovered in Soshanguve on the 10th of October 2020,
with certain body parts missing.
The accused has prolonged the legal procedure at first, he
gave the false address, which caused the bail process to be delayed; more
recently he has acted as if he is insane, telling the judge that he is seeing a
train.

South African Reserve Bank
Functions and Roles of the South African Reserve Bank
South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is the
central bank of South Africa. established in 1921 after the parliament passed
an act “Currency and Bank act” of 10th August 1920, as a direct of
the abnormal monetary and financial conditions which had been the results of World
War 1. The SARB was the fourth central bank established outside of the United
Kingdom and Europe, the others being United states, Japan, and Java.
The prior recommendations for the establishment
of this central bank dates to 1879, A selected committee consisting of ten
members of parliament was established on the 31st of March 1920 to
investigate the benefit to the national interest of the central bank. Following
on the suggestions of the committee, the SARB opened for business on 30th
June 1921, making it now the oldest bank in Africa because it is now 100 years
old.
The reserve bank has a mandate to protect the
value of the currency in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic
growth, and it has a complimentary mandate which means the financial sector
regulation act assigns the SARB responsibility to maintain, promote and enhance
financial stability.
The functions SARB is that it ensures the
safety and soundness of the South Africa’s modern financial system and the
national payment system. SARB provides important economic and financial statistic
which provide an overview and presentation of South Africa’s economic
situation. SARB also has static mandate for improving and protecting South
Africa’s financial stability.
SARB’s roles include issuing and destroying
banknotes and coins, regulating, and overseeing financial institutions,
managing the country’s official gold and foreign reserves, managing the
national payment system, and administering the remaining exchange rate. Finally,
the control system acts as a banker to the government.
The SARB is also unique, and it does not have
competitors because there is no other central bank in South Africa. It plays a
very interesting and exciting roles, with in the country it supports the
economy of the country in so many ways, for example every economy is supposed
to have its own currency, in other
words there must be a medium of exchange for goods and services for trade to
take place and in order for people to generate income and livelihood the must
be a denominator which is of value that people are prepaid to accept in
exchange for their services in exchange for the goods that their supplying.
The SARB with two million shares issued is one
of the world’s reserve banks, which have shareholders other than their
respective national governments. The only restriction on shareholding is
privatized; there can be approximately 700 shareholders in the SARB at present
no single action holders may own more than 10 000 shares.
Shareholders qualify for a dividend of not more
than 10 South African cents (the total maximum dividend is therefore 200000
South African Rand or maximum R1000 South African Rand for any individual
shareholders) with the remining profit being paid to the South African
government.

International Youth day
International Youth day
12 August
In order to promote
long-term human development, youth engagement and participation are critical.
However, for many youngsters political,
economic and social options are limited or non-existent.
We are commemorating
International youth day today. This day was observed on August the 12th and it is intended to be celebrated or
observed annually. The United Nations General Assembly approved the
recommendations made by the meeting of Ministers responsible for youth (Lisbon 8-12
August 1998) that 12 August should be declared International Youth Day in its
resolution clause 54/120 on the 17th December 1999.
The importance of youth participation in current events is recognized and emphasized on International
youth day. UNFPA defends young people’s rights and aims to help them reach
their full potential. Throughout the year, UNFPA has beaten the drum of
physical autonomy which needs repeating.
Individuals have the
right to make choices about their bodies and their future. We also know that
many people are turned down when it comes to job and education opportunities, but we cannot overlook the fact that young people
are claiming it. Adolescence and girls are not only opposing harmful behavior like
female genital modification and underage marriage, but they also advocating
against them.
This day has been
commemorated with many themes over the years, with today theme being “
Transforming food systems : Innovation for human and planetary health,” (helping people realize the importance of healthy diet), which
attempts to emphasize that the success of global endeavor will not be possible
without the active involvement of young people.
Youth from all over the
world are encouraged to arrange events to raise awareness of the circumstances
in their mother lands, and provide a summary of their plans to Youth@UN.org the most innovative events will be displayed on the
program’s website to show how International youth day is commemorated around
the world and to inspire more youth to get involved.
