Heritage Day is on the 24th of September every
year. On this day we recognize and celebrate the cultural wealth of South
Africa. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering their cultural route,
their ancestral lineage and the cultural diversity that is found in the
motherland. To mark this day, a variety of events are held across the country
Shaka day, commentating the Zulu monarch Shaka Zulu was
celebrated on September 24th in South Africa historically. He was credited
with bringing the Zulu clan together and forming it every year where people assemble
at his grave to pay their respects. After receiving some criticism from the
Inkhatha Freedom Party (IFP) a majority of Zulu Party, a request for this day to be
approved as an official holiday was refused in 1995, it was decided that the
day is needed and would be known as “Heritage day”
Various youth have expressed their definitions of what is
heritage day and how would they like it to be celebrated Rehauhetswe Mohale
said “Heritage is a day we celebrate culture and diversity
And the how part is to try to remember roots by wearing the
traditional outfits, trying out african dishes and learning about different
cultures” while Zandile Magubane said “Heritage day is a day dedicated to
culture which is a broad cover of heritage. I say broad because heritage is
culture and nowadays culture has evolved.
So I would wish for heritage day to be celebrated by doing
something that showcases cultures. Something in which all public figures are
involved so that they can influence the public to participate. Basically doing
something as a country al at the same time. Like the December 31st
countdown but based on culture, heritage”
Due to Corona virus we can not go out there and celebrate
our different cultures. We all hope this pandemic could
pass so that we can go and show people around the world the beauty of South
Africa.
