International Youth day

In order to promote long-term human development, youth engagement and participation are critical. However, for many youngsters political,  economic and social options are limited or non-existent.

We are commemorating International youth day today. This day was observed on August the 12^th  and it is intended to be celebrated or observed annually. The United Nations General Assembly approved the recommendations made by the meeting of Ministers responsible for youth (Lisbon 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August should be declared International Youth Day in its resolution clause 54/120 on the 17^th December 1999.

The importance of youth participation in current events is recognized and emphasized on International youth day. UNFPA defends young people’s rights and aims to help them reach their full potential. Throughout the year, UNFPA has beaten the drum of physical autonomy  which needs repeating.

Individuals have the right to make choices about their bodies and their future. We also know that many people are turned down when it comes to job and education opportunities, but we cannot overlook the fact that young people are claiming it. Adolescence and girls are not only opposing harmful behavior like female genital modification and underage marriage, but they also advocating against them.

This day has been commemorated with many themes over the years, with today theme being “ Transforming food systems : Innovation for human and planetary health,” (helping people realize the importance of healthy diet), which attempts to emphasize that the success of global endeavor will not be possible without the active involvement of young people.

Youth from all over the world are encouraged to arrange events to raise awareness of the circumstances in their mother lands, and provide a summary of their plans to Youth@UN.org the most innovative events will be displayed on the program’s website to show how International youth day is commemorated around the world and to inspire more youth to get involved.
